From a system perspective, these are three different features.

From a user’s perspective, they are all variations of the same intent:

“I want to send or manage payments.”

  • Transfers under “Accounts”

  • Auto-pay under “Settings”

Nothing is technically wrong. But now the user has to think before acting.

“Let’s put it here for now, we’ll clean it up later.”

How to Decide Where a Feature Actually Belongs

Instead of asking “where can we fit this?”, the more useful approach is to step back and evaluate placement from a user perspective.

Start with the user’s intent, not the feature name

Feature names are internal language. Users don’t think in those terms.

For example:

  • “Usage Analytics Dashboard” → user intent: “check performance”
  • “Subscription Management” → user intent: “control my plan”

Placement should follow what the user is trying to achieve, not how the system defines it.

Ask a very simple question: where would someone look first?

This sounds basic, but it’s one of the most reliable tests.

If a first-time user opens your product:

  • Where would they naturally go?
  • What label would they trust?

If the answer is unclear or debated internally, that’s already a signal.

Check if the feature strengthens or stretches the section

Every section in a product has an implied meaning.

When you add a feature:

  • does it make that meaning clearer?
  • or does it stretch it slightly?

That “slightly” is important. One stretched placement doesn’t break anything. Repeated stretching does.

When You Should Stop Fitting and Start Rethinking

There’s a point where adding features into existing sections stops working.

You’ll notice it when:

  • section names start feeling vague (“More”, “Services”, “Tools”)
  • unrelated features sit next to each other
  • users rely more on search than navigation

Take 3–5 hypothetical features

  • Where would each of these go?
  • Does the placement feel obvious or forced?

If you hesitate, or if multiple features feel like they “don’t quite fit,” your structure is already under strain. This exercise is essentially a lightweight information architecture audit, and it’s the fastest way to expose scalability gaps before they become expensive to fix.
